Alice Springs is splat bang in the middle of Australia's Red Centre and some 1500km from any major city, so really it's in the middle of bloody nowhere! Flying was definitely a wise option on such a tight schedule. We arrived late afternoon to brilliant sunshine (it was certainly much warmer then Melbourne) and were greeted by hundreds of over friendly flies. We picked up our hire car hassle free, although were pretty surprised that it was white considering we were about to drive through the red centre?!
Alice was more of a hub for us to get to the famous Uluru (Ayres Rock), some 473km drive (4½ hours). Hiring a car meant that we could drive at our own pace and stop when we wanted to - much better then sitting on a coach full of people we thought. First impressions on Alice, it seems a very typical outback Australian town, think Crocodile Dundee or Castlemaine XXXX ads. It's a place where people still have mullets, the blokes call woman 'Shelia's and the majority of people drive utes. Other Australians (Queenslanders or Victorians) refer to it as Hicksville!
We decided to take full advantage of the nice weather and almost having the motel to ourselves decided to cook Mary and Stephen their long overdue Aussie barbie, snags and all the trimmings. We had a chilled evening in Alice in preparation for the early morning start and long trip ahead.
