The few weeks we spent in Brisbane were a struggle, as not through lack of trying we just couldn't find any work, plus it rained every day (except 2 I think) which made it miserable. It's even difficult to get bar or cafe work in Australia as most employers ask you for a certificate saying you have completed the relevant training course - what on pouring pints or making coffee!?! We did, however, manage to get ourselves a flat in a place called New Farm, 30 minutes from the city centre. It was an old style Queensland house turned in to units with a shared bathroom, advertised specifically as 'The Hub' for backpackers, I would say the 'The Hole' suited it better. Our landlord Chico was so tight that he hadn't even bothered putting a double bed in the room and we had to sleep on 2 mattresses on the floor - grotty or what! So things weren't really going to plan to say the least, fruit picking wasn't sounding so bad now.
Obviously under the circumstances we found it really hard to enjoy Brisbane or Bris Vegas, as it's known, but taking that aside we didn't really think as a city it was really anything special. It's just a mass of concrete blocks and grids, there was no character or buzz, not enough to keep us interested - maybe it's because we're Londoners. Limited on time anyway, with only a couple of weeks before meeting Mary & Stephen (Matt's parents) we decided to cut our losses and for the sake of our sanity leave Brisbane behind once again.
