Sun, Sea, Sand and Singha!
Entry 3 of 90 | show all | print this entry |
With the water festival over and us checked in to a guest house on the Khao San Road our sole mission was to find a decent travel agent and book our ticket out of Bangkok to Ko Samui. Due to our budget flying was not an option, so unfortunately we had to brave a 14 hour coach and boat journey. Imagine our shear joy when we were able to get a ticket for the next day (Sunday). We had a good night that night - drinking, haggling with the market stall sellers, Matt even got to watch the Crystal Palace v Norwich game but we were definitely looking forward to moving on. We had to check out of our room at 12pm the next day but lucky for us we able to leave our backpacks in reception - we managed to kill 6 hours until we were picked up for the coach. The coach journey wasn't as bad as we thought, the seats reclined and it was air conditioned - 10 hours on we arrived at Surat Thani (Southern Thailand) and had to wait around for 3 hours before the boat was due to leave (8am). When we finally got on it, it was another 2 1/2 hour journey but we made it and has defiantly been worth it. We are staying in a place called Hat Chaweng (we have been here 4 days now), the beaches are absolutely beautiful - golden sand, clear water etc, the only downfall for us is it feels more like we are in Greece or Spain then in Thailand - with all the bars, clubs and deluxe hotels, it is definitely geared more to the package holiday maker. We are currently staying in what I can only describe as a shack - we are currently sharing our bathroom with a lizard (Lizzy) and there was a cockroach which Matt kindly got rid of - after he stepped on it! There is not much you can get around here for 400B (about 5.50) which we have set as our budget, we are currently spending far too much money out here - especially on food, we are eating more pasta then Thai food!! The sun is blazing here, not like in Bangkok were it was hot, smelly and smoggy - you can actually breathe. Our first day we sat for about 1 1/2 in the sun and were both red that night so being extra careful and putting lots of cream on (I am on factor 20 - for people that know me that is very high!). We made friends with a group of people from Manchester on Tuesday night - it was good fun, we went and watched a 'lady boy' show which was highly amusing and entertaining. They all lined up at the end and you could go and have your photo taken with them, we forgot how strong the beer (Singha) is and spent most of yesterday in bed! Went to catch some rays today but it started to rain about 1.30pm (hence why we are in the net cafe early), it has cleared up now so don't want to make you too jealous but we are going to go back and lie on the beach! We are looking to maybe go to Ko Pha Ngan next week as it is more geared for back packers - we'll keep you posted. Love to all.
