Where I stayed

We had a really disturbed nights sleep in the hostel in Punta Arenas, our room was so cold that we had to go to bed in trousers and jumpers.  We awoke to a clear day though which filled me with confidence that our flight wouldnīt be too bumpy, Iīm never good on the smaller planes. We had to kill a few hours in the freezing hostel before getting a taxi to the airport. We arrived 2 hours early, enough time to have some lunch and a few beers for my pre-flight jitters.

We hadnīt been informed that the flight wasnīt direct, I canīt remember where we stopped now but we had only been on the plane for 45 minutes. We had to take off and land twice before arriving in Puerto Montt 2 hours later.  We had a good flight in the end, hardly any bumps at all and because we werenīt flying too high and the day was clear we could see all the beautiful lakes and mountains below.

We had to catch an airport transfer bus to the town centre of Puerto Montt, then jump on a micro (a mini van) to get to Puerto Varas. Eventually we arrived around 7pm and were glad that we had bothered to pre-book a hostel on the web, Hostel World has been a god send since being in South America. The hostel, Casa Azul was run by a Chilean / German couple and so far it has been the neatest, cleanest hostel we have stayed in. Not to mention the lovely Japanese style garden it had with a pond and huge carp fish. We needed a few days to chill out and catch up with ourselves and this seemed like the ideal place.

Puerto Varas is a formal German colony and it certainly has a small German town feel to it.  It sits on the edge of Lake Llanquihue and on a clear day you can see Volcan Osorno.  We were luckily enough to get one day of beautiful sunshine before it started to rain again, supposedly it rains here a lot.  The rain didnīt bother us though, it was nice not to do much for a few days and with a decent supermarket in town we were happy to have some nights in the hostel cooking for ourselves.
