Bluetooth: Connecting a PC and a cellular phone with each other

Frequently people ask me how to set up a connection between a computer and a mobile phone. In the instruction underneath I'll explain how to make a connection between a Nokia device and a PC and how to make a connection between Nokia PC Suite and your mobile phone step by step. This manual is writen for Nokia Symbian devices and Windows XP servicepack 1.

First you have to make sure you've installed the software of the bluetooth doungle. After this you can install (!) the Nokia PC Suite, this to make sure that you can't make any mistakes.

The description underneath is written for a ZIO bluetooth doungle via USB. My experience with this is that other bluetooth doungles work the same but the options in the menu can be verbalized otherwise. Please pick up this description a bit creative when you have an other doungle.

Step 1: Search with your mobile phone to your computer with "New pared device." (Bluetooth -> pared devices (tab 2) -> options -> New pared device). When you've found your computer you have to make the connection and you give in a passkey (for example 0). Give in this same passkey into your computer and authorize in your cellular phone the connection with your computer (bluetooth -> pared devices (tab 2) -> options -> authorized). By doing this you you will authorize your computer to make a connection with your cellular phone when needed.

Step 2: Turn the bluetooth on you mobile phone off and then on again (to prevent errors).

Step 3: On your PC: Double click on the mRouter logo in the taskbar (two grey triangles mRouter disconnected) and click on COM 5 (this is different on every computer therefore you can make several marks). When you don't see the mRouter logo you didn't install Nokia PC Suite or this function is turned off. You need Nokia PC Suite to search for connections.

Step 4: Now search your mobile phone with your computer. You can do this by clicking on the bluetooth logo in the taskbar or on the desktop (a blue logo with a "B" in it Bluetooth logo). After this you click on "Entire Bluetooth Neighbourhood" in the explorer with your right mouse button. Then a menu pops up and you have to choose "search for devices". When you've found your cellular phone you have to click on the icon of your phone with you right mouse button and choose for "pair device". Now give in a passkey on your computer and after this you have to give it in on your mobile phone (answer with the same number). Now the connection between your computer and your cellular phone is authorized.

Step 5: Make a connection from your computer to your cellular phone by clicking on the bluetooth logo in the start beam (blue logo with a "B" in it Bluetooth logo), After this you choose "Entire Bluetooth Neighbourhood" and then you click on the name (if you tuned one in in your cellular phone) of your mobile phone and a record of services appears. Now you have to double click on "Bluetooth serial port" and your computer makes a connection with your cellular phone. Most of the time you will get an error, ignore this and click as soon as you can on OK...

Step 6: After 3 to 5 seconds after the error occured a connection is made between your computer and your cellular phone. If this isn't the case you can try again. After the connection is made the mRouter will make a connection too and you can boot Nokia PC Suite (you can see this because the mRouter changes to: mRouter connected). If the mRouter isn't becoming active after a few times you have to try it on another comport by tuning other (or several) ports in at your mRouter.

Step 7: After the connection is made with PC Suite you can do everything that you want... You can also use other programs such as Epoc Filemanager (for the Nokia 7650 and the SE p800) or Oxygen Phone Manager to administer your cellular phone.
