Ecuador = Equator

If you haven't noticed the odd similarity in the two words of the title of this entry, Ecuador, is smack dab on the equator. A bus ride 11/2 hours north of Quito gets you to Mitad del Mundo, literally, the middle of the world.

They've setup a theme park on the "supposed' equator which is both extremely cheesy and also incorrectly positioned. It turns out that the big red line showing the middle the of the world which is painted through out Mitad del Mundo isn't the equator at all!

Traveler's tip: anyone should probably avoid visiting Mitad del Mundo! It was expensive and essentially just a giant tourist trap.

What was interesting though, was a few doors down the road. Another museum which seems to be setup in a slummy part of the area is well worth the visit.

This is the REAL equator, measured using GPS. They've setup experiments which are very cool. One experiment has a basin of water. They place the basin on the equator and remove the plug and the water goes straight down the drain without spinning! Then they retry the experiment 2 feet to the left of the equator and the water spins clock wise, the same experiment 2 feet on the other side of the equator and the water spins the other way.

It's all explained that the gravitational forces of the earth, what ever it is, it's very impressive.

You can also balance an egg on a nail right on the equator. If you can pull it off, you get a fancy certificate too. Both Andrea and I balanced the egg after a few attempts.

Aside from our visit to the equator, we didn't do much else in Quito. Quito is a pretty cool town with good food. The many stern warnings we received about its safety at night kept us indoors so we didn't experience much past sunset. We were only there for one day then we flew off to Galapagos for a few weeks.
