We fell back into the same room at the same guesthouse back in Bangkok. It's clean, basic and has cheap bag storage. Only 5 baht a day!! Paul and Julie are back tomorrow and we're all going to be tourists at the Grand Palace. It's another place David and I haven't been to for years. Last time David had to wear a dodgy long skirt they provided because he was wearing shorts! We'll go prepared this time.
The weather was boiling and Paul looked uncomfortably hot wandering round looking at the grandness of the Grand Palace. It's a huge place with lots of shiny mosaics covering buildings and gold leaf everywhere making it look very royal and gleamingly grand. The King doesn't actually live here anymore so it's only used for ceremonial occasions. There's actually a wat and the palace to see so you could spend hours there easily. It's a relatively old place dating back to the 1780's. The wat was built specifically to house the legendary Emerald Buddha which is older than all the buildings around it. It is believed to be at least 600 years old and isn't emerald at all, but jasper quartz. It's lived in loads of places over Thailand and Laos. It has a different robe for each season that is changed by the King himself! There's a huge replica of Angkor Wat too. I don't have to go now, I've seen what it looks like right here!! After a few hours we all decided we'd seen enough and it was far too hot to pursue outdoor activities so we decided to meet up for dinner.
We ate at a seafood place that does a great cheap whole red snapper bbq'd, just staggering distance from our guesthouse. Fabulous. Julie and I had G & T entrees and boys got the beers started. They went down nicely and we quickly lost count. Time flys when you're having fun and we soon found ourselves at an outside mobile bar that I'd always wanted to have a drink at. The buckets were out! If you're in Thailand you should try a bucket. It's gotta be done. They're great fun to share! Luckily Paul and Julie had their heads screwed on and called it quits at a decent hour. They had a morning flight and had to have their act together in the morning. I'm grateful they did. Buckets can be fun, but deadly!
We sent them off with 'see you laters' instead of 'goodbye's' as we would be seeing them in London in the not too distant future and wandered back to our guesthouse arm in arm mumbling about our fun night. But I already knew in the back of my mind that I'd be nursing a horrible hangover in the morning.
Tomorrow we're off to Phuket to see a life long friend of David's. But thankfully we don't have to checkout until mid-day.
