One hassle of hiring a car is finding a bloody parking space. The old part of Tarragona was another walled city and our hotel appeared to be inside the wall somewhere. Do you think we could find anywhere to park in a small, historical, sunny, seaside Spanish town? No wonder all the cars have multiple scrapes and dings.

Anyway, we eventually found the way and not long after we were soaking up the rays in the town square, sunnies on enjoying coffee and tapas.

We did the usual and got a map, then headed down towards the sea for the roman amphitheatre. Fantastic location for an amphitheatre but it wasn't as spectacular as others we'd seen. They'd tried to partially rebuild it, not a great job, although it was lovely to sit on top of the walls and look out over the ocean. We went back up the hill and over to the 'Roman Circus'. It was the place where the chariot races were held and there was a bit of a tower and other connecting bits and pieces. This all led to the Provincial Forum which apparently was the political and economic administrative centre. It had medieval tunnels underneath, which were cool and a kind of museum. We climbed the tower for the great views over town and the coast. The walls of the courtyard were lined with chicken wire to keep pigeons out, but it looked as though they'd been playing kamikaze and there were dead ones hanging from various points. Nice.

One thing that Tarragona has in common with a lot of other European towns is the gossos (dog shit). Well, there were signs saying 'gossos', so I'm assuming it meant shit. It's everywhere.

We found a great pizza place for lunch, sampled the white sangria and then took a walk around the old walls and the cathedral and wandererd around the back streets.

We went to a tapas bar for dinner and riojo. I thought I'd ordered a small portion of the cured ham, WRONG!! My spanish lessons have taught me nothing. I'd ordered a huge plate of it. Bugger. That alone cost us nearly 20 euros!! But it was 'muy rico'!

We had a huge drive tomorrow. We were heading over to Zaragoza to see another big cathedral.
