Flag of Germany  , Berlin,
Tuesday, July 14, 2009

The map shows us in Berlin but we are actually in a small resort town called Warnemunde - I may have spelled that incorrectly. This is in an area of Germany that used to be communist - the GDR as they all refer to it here. We had an interesting tour of a medieval town called Rostock where we visited a brewery and did some sampling. We got to see a huge cathedral that was constructed in the 13th century along with a convent from the same era. We spent the afternoon by the sea in Warnemunde. It is a very busy place as lots of Germans like to holiday here. Prices much more reasonable than Copenhagen so we treated ouselves to more German beer.

I got the imprression that the people in this part of Germany are still not quite used to tourists. Our guide informed us that they would be quite reserved and not particularly friendly, which was the case. They are very efficient and no nonsense in their interactions with tourists.

Back on board ship we attended a concert by a traditional German oomp-ah band. They are also offering a German buffet for those who didn't get enough sausage on their tours today. We decided to pass on that but who knows what might happen later this evening.

There is entertainment of some sort every night here and the times vary so we're never too sure what time we will get to bed. The last few nights it has been pretty late but tomorrow is a day at sea and it will also be our second formal night. We'll see who stuck to the formal dress pact!!

A note about pictures. You will notice that I haven't uploaded any. It is not possible from the computer stations that they have here on the ship. However, I just spoke with the crew member in charge of the computer room and he has offered to let me use his laptop and try to upload from there. I'll maybe give that a try tomorrow. If it can't be done or is too time consuming (it costs 42 cents a minute to be online), I'll upload some pictures when I get home.

I hope all goes well with all of you. Thanks for taking the time to post comments. We enjoy hearing from you.
