Having survived seveal harrowing taxi rides, Istanbul is more than I ever expected. Yesterday on arrival at the Hotel Empress Zoe (beyond perfect) we walked to the ferry. Took an around about route, about three miles. Saw men fishing the Bosphorus from shore, men eating and drinking behind bolders to block the wind. Made boat to Asia side. Terrifying taxi ride with driver who spoke little English, he got out to ask directions  "Don't take my car!" -- and great dinner. Stuck in traffic crossing bridge on way home, passed stadium with soccer game going on, street vendors selling food, mosques lit up. Had to ask directions -- cabbie -- then us -- twice -- got home in hysterics. This moring wonderful breakfast in hotel, then off to Aya Sofya and the Topkapi Palace. Lunch at the palace was unforgetable and delightful.  Bought two shawls on street, Deb and I lost Steve but met Tobar the carpet salesman. Young, cute of Cherokee descent and distant relative of Ghengis Khan -- believe it or not. Took Deb and I to his shop, served us apple tea, introduced his friend and trainer (who had a beef -cake photo of himself on his cell phone) ended with a hand kiss and a promise to return tomorrow. Somehow tomorrow never comes. Tonight the Blue Masque and dinner at a local fish restaurant. Just finished cappuccino  -- Deb and Steve had tea. Off for an evening in Istanbul -- could I stay forever? Perhaps yes...
Photos to come, God willing. Love to all -- Lois
