We are back safely on Koh Samui. I don't even know where to begin this entry... this one is going to have to be a collaborative effort becaus sooo much has happened! We made our way to Koh Phanang via van (during which there was a strange driver spraying down our van with aerosol spray incident...),and ferry (aka slow boat), the boat ride was about 45 minutes, and was essentially a pre-party... all young kids our age, most of them already half drunk. We disembarked in Koh Phanang, and made our way through the winding streets of downtown to the beach, where we encountered...FULL MOON PARTY MADNESS!

We began the night be walking up and down the entire stretch of beach to check out our surroundings. There were thousands of people, all young, all tan and muscular, and half naked painted with black light sensitive body paint, there were fire jugglers (these guys must have been marial artists with bad ass bo staff skills!), all the drinks are sold in little buckets with five billion straws (all the better to ruffee you with...), and there was club after club after club bumping hip hop and techno with the party spilling into and out of the bars and beach with no differentiation between any space, just one giant mad dance party. We sat on the beach outside of one of the spots and just sorta people watched for a while, and then we found a spot we liked, playing some good hip hip (I use the term 'good' quite loosely here, but for dancing it was perfect), and danced for probably an hour or so... though with no watch, we had NO idea of the time. We decided to take a break, and found a spot in the downtown area to sit and have some water and take in all the beautifull freaks cruising around town. Somehow... our clock got f'd up and it was perpetually 10:45... which like idiots we didn't realize for quite some time. We had the requisite, 'were never going to make it till 6am panic attacks' and tried to pace ourselves. Then our savior (in the form of a middle aged kiwi), approached. He chatted for a while, curious why we had been sitting there for two hours (he had apparantly seen us every time he passed, and wanted to make sure we were alright, we chatted for a bit more, this guy was a total sweet heart, and then he explained it was 3am... WOO HOO!!! Beth and i, newly envigorated, made our way back to the beach. Sat on a blanket outside of the CRAZY raver tent, and watched some peeps doing their crazy raver thing for a while. Then we made our way to our favorite dance spot again, and started dancing up a storm. It was so hot, and so crowded with half naked beautifull young people, like a scene out of some independent film or something. We had many strange encounters with people including but not limited to a guy who resembled a ken doll approaching us and telling us we were really special (not sure if he meant this in the 'short bus' sense, or in the we werent being drunken floozies like the rest of the girls way... who knows); the little indian guy who tried to reason with us into dancing with him... at which point he told us all of the rejection lines he had heard that evening... even the one that someones boyfriend was a serial axe murderer, so we chatted with him a bit, sweet kid; then there was 'the body' nothing more need be said about this guy; and the beautifull south american amazon men with stars of david (in the crazy black light paint) across their arms, backs, chests etcf...; there was the crazy adorable lip-ringed irish guy who i stepped on, and as i appologized he was like 'you broke my toe..." being the sucker i am i immediatly started appologizing, oh my gosh im so sorry, are you okay etc... at which point he looked like he felt horrible and smiled and told me he was just kidding and started appologizing profusely; there was also the 'crazy disseased guy' as beth and i dubbed him, who looked sort of like a rabbid dog and repeatedly over the course of the evening kept trying to dance with us and we kept running away because he was seriously foaming at the mouth; the cute hippie girl we picked up (her boyfriend apparantly hates dancing, and safety in numbers i suppose); etc etc etc...

then another break after beth repeatedly found herself being elbowed by passers by. Back to our same spot again, beth got a crepe, i just sat, no kiwi, but LOTS of other interesting people watching... the western dudes and scantily clad young thai girls (i use prostitute hesitantly, but im pretty possitive thats what was going on), later on we saw two of these women at different times being carried to the clinic, completely wasted off of who knows what; there was the adorable lost guy (maybe a brit?) who just came upt ot us and asked us where his hotel was... no name of hotel, jsu tthat he was lost and couldnt find his way home, where was it. There were the two french guys, who drunkenly stumbled up to us, one friend pointing at the orange and green paint on his budies face and explained to us that he didn't believe he had paint on his face, could we confirm this for him, we said yes, there is paint on your face, then a question which we both heard to be something along the lines of is it green? We bot hanswered a firm yes... but apparantly the question was is he ugly, then there was explaining, making fun of their vanity, general chatting, some declerations on our part in french, and their response... we love you, beautifull girls, and the shock that we were american (this has been a normal one for us... what, you are american... you arent lound and stupid and fat and obnoxious... how is this possible?), the friend offering us some of his drink, the other one joking that it was 'ful of egzastee...', and the final remark that, 'of courze we aare drunk, ve are fraench!!!' finally the walk back to the ferry, waiting around, getting on the ferry (6am-ish) waiting on the ferry for nearly an hour (it went from being dark to being light...), laughing with the group of aussie boys sitting with us, laughing at the drunken british ho-tards making assholes of themselves throwing themselves at our aussie friends, the ferry ride back, the van ride back, the hotel not having our same room rate, us not caring because we were so tired and taking the upgradem but it was 7am and the room wouldnt be ready till 9am. The lovely ladies ta the front desk who are at this point our best friends, and totally lookin out for us (they held our backpacks behind the desk last night, gave us a deal on the room, let us have a safety deposit boy despite not staying ther last night etc...) told us to chill by the pool till the room was ready , they gave us a bunch of towels, and we were 'those guys' who passed our on the lounge chairs fully clothed, looking like bums who didn't pay for lodgind and just free-loaded and slept on lounge chairs... hahaha. Then into our room... AMAZING! 20$ in Thailand gets you your own private hut with ac, tv!!!, an entire remote controlled room, a bathroom with a GROTTO... a garden and jacuzzi etc, free bottles of water, free enormous amazing continental breakfast, free all you can drink coffee etc... were enjoying our last night living like queens... were off to book our travle back to the other side, phuket, phi phi, krabbi... ive been all of these places so im letting beth decide where she wants to go. Were oredering in pizza (overloaded on noodles and rice) and watching glorious tv( remember neither beth or i had tv this year in new orleans) in our AIR CONDITIONED room!!! We had a blast, and i am so happy that we did this, but in retrospect im still a grandma at heart, and the all-nighter rave dance party thing is more than i need to do again. Love to all!
