In Bangkok SAFE!!!!
Neither Beth or I had functioning audio systems on our 12 hour flight to Tokyo, so no quality entertainment (think Vin Diesel in the Pacifier... thanks but no), but extra sleep and a free plane ticket more than made up for it. 2 hour layover in Tokyo. 7 hour flight to Bangkok, which we both slept entirely through. Shuttle bus to the comfort suites when our flight got in about 11pm (yes they have them here), our splurge 25 dollar hotel room for the first night, and SLEEP! We woke up at 9, had our free continetnal breakfast, checked out, took a cab to embassy row to start working on visas for vietnam, singapore, china etc... & check in with american embassy... though as expected the us embassy was less than helpfull.
Beth had a bit of a bump on the head getting into the taxi, and perhaps a moment of being overwhelmed by the controlled chaos that is Bangkok, but took a deep breath and dealt with it all in true champ fashion. We took a cab for a hundred or so bhat (a couple bucks) to Thanon Khao San and West Banglamphu area. This is the area where most of the budget travellers find hostels, guest houses etc... and generally chill. We picked the Prakorp's Guest house from our lonely planet asia on a shoestring guide, and walked till we found it (only took us 5 minutes... not bad!). The family who runs the place are very sweet, and the showed us our room, a double... WITH A FAN!!! The place is 175 bhat a night, so about 2 bucks for each of us a night, Beth and i are quite happy about this. Clean bathroom and shower downstairs, and they lock up at midnight, so its all quite safe. Weve got our trusty silk sleep sacks and pillow cases, so it is that much nicer. This internet cafe is right across the street, we just gave a ring to beths mom to let her know we were safe, and Lordres will now call my mom to let her know... so hopefully they will be in calmer spirits. Now were off to a travel office to decide what is next on the itinerary... probably some travel within thailand Ko Saui, Phuket, Krabbi, Phi Phi... who knows. And to book flights to vietnam china etc... LOVE TO ALL!!!
