I left Sandy with a present from home - a little cotton bag with the Egypt exhibit at the Royal BC Museum painted on its' side. Sandy saw me off and I began my drive up the New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island coasts to Massachusetts and Foxboro stopping in to see beaches and other interesting spots along the way. One was a little private beach. Another was Mystic Beach.

Prior to 1800, Mystic Beach was a sparsely settled region. The population depended on agriculture for subsistence and occasionally profit. The leading historical event during the colonial period had been the defeat and the near annihilation of the Pequot Indians. The Pequot Wars in 1637, which began in the hills, is considered by many historians to be the first important conflict between English settlers and the Native populations of North America. [From the information I have read, it was basically a slaughter] During the nineteenth century, fishing, sealing, whaling and particularly ship building became the principal activities in the Valley. During the Civil War, Mystic's seaports launched more vessels than any other New England port except Boston. The town of Mystic is connected by a highway bridge which is in the exact spot as the first bridge to cross the Mystic River in 1819.

When I got to Cally's home(she is another online friend), she and Elaine were out at a bell ringing event. Andy was out. I played with the wonderfully welcoming cats and updated my journal until about 8pm when Cally and Elaine returned and we went out to a lovely Thai restaurant which gave portions so large that we could not finish. Andy home later.
