Flag of Peru  , Puno Region,
Monday, June 24, 2013

There have been about a million parades in the town of Puno and although I've documented the highlights, please do not assume that these pictures even come close to capturing Puno's seemingly insatiable love for parades. From what I can gather, no celebration is too small to warrant a town-wide parade; dances, school celebrations, and national flag day are just a few examples. On that note, Monday was the national birthday celebration for all Peruvian ovejas (aka sheep). The festivities, which include painting these little creatures all sorts of colors, take place in the country-side, so I sadly didn't get to partake.

Somehow my coworkers found out that I had let my birthday slip by without a peep the other week, so we had a communal June birthday party tonight. The video says it all. After singing happy birthday and blowing out the candle, they kept telling me to "bite" the cake. I though, "that can't be right...I must be misunderstanding" so I kept stealing glances at my fellow birthday girl in hopes that she would clear up the confusion. Alas, they got me! Very cute. After barely finishing half of the SUPER SIZED piece of cake and cup of cola I was given (as I write this I am literally twitching with all the sugar surging through my veins) the ceremony ended with everyone, I mean EVERYONE, getting in line to hug and kiss each of us birthday girls. Between all the bodily friction and the extremely dry and cold climate I was sparking everything I touched by the end of the lineup.

In other news I believe I have developed Chilblains, a condition in which your extremities (in my case my toes) become blistered, itchy and painful due to the cold. There is apparently no real cure for this besides time and moving to a warmer climate. My mom insists that this is a "19th century affliction," and while I'm not sure if that is supposed to make me feel better or worse, I am glad that I've at least ruled out foot fungus. I read somewhere that nightly foot massages are meant to help the circulation -- any takers??
