Entry 10 of 17 | show all | print this entry

Today we were prepared for a long day. We got up early and had breakfast at about 7. That meant we had to be up at 6-6.30 at the latest. We then had to rush and meet the 'English speaking' tour guide in the lobby at 7.30 am. Her name was Shirley and she was very nice. We hopped on the bus and drove to the Summer Palace.

The summer palace was beautiful. It has the longest corridor in China, with beautiful paintings and decorations. Shirley said they (the emperor and his wife.) would only spend one or two nights there, before returning to the forbidden city. We looked in a few windows and saw really pretty vases and furniture. It has mostly been restored and the corridor only uses 12 nails in the whole thing!

After the Summer palace we went for a 'Hutong tour.' Mum described it as the Sovereign Hill of China. We rode in rickshaws and had a 'happy time', we made dumplings with a local family and we visited the  bell tower. It was pretty littered and the houses had like two rooms; kitchen and dinning area and a bedroom/living room area.

We jumped on the bus and we found we had quite a bit of time to fill before the show. So we asked to go to the pearl market. Shirley took us quite literally and took us to a shop that sold only pearls. So we detoured off to the silk market instead. We were taking a head count once we got to the silk market and realized we couldn't find Hayley! We looked around the market, on the bus until it occurred to us that she never got on the bus! Shirley called the Pearl market and there she was. She didn't even realize she was lost! She even got a free can of coke  so she was pleased

Once that had been sorted out, we only had 15 minutes left. James, Elyse and I grabbed 100 Yuan off mum and went speed shopping. We found a dress Elyse liked, 5 minutes of bargaining later she had a new silk, traditional dress. (25 Yuan. It was a good price. You know when it's a good price when they say you're killing them.) We spotted a China top for James. 1 minute later he had a 25 Yuan China top. We started looking for a handbag for me when one lady got a little grabby and I couldn't get away. So that left us with around 2 minutes. We went to the meeting place and I spotted some cute earring right near the meeting place. So I bought them- not a good price- and that was our speedy bargaining.

The acrobatics show was pretty good. It was a crap story line about Buddha and stuff, but they did some pretty cool flips and stuff. It got pretty boring in times when they were randomly worshiping someone. But little kids were doing some really awesome tricks. I can't even explain them.

We need a quick and easy dinner option so we went McDonalds. After McDonalds, we walked home and had an Easter egg hunt, since it is Easter Sunday. We found all the eggs and decided to play our traditional Easter game; throw the eggs into a fan. It's so funny, you throw hollow eggs only in a fan (a ceiling fan is preferred.) and they get caught and all of a sudden are spit out in a random direction. We had eggs flying everywhere, hitting James (he got a spilt lip. But it was nothing major.), hitting Amy in the chest fling to the other side of the hotel room. Dad was holding the fan and if we didn't get in the fan, dad would get hit.

Once the last of the eggs had been ruined, we settled down to watch music and lyrics or go to bed. Which every we preferred.
