On an evening in Roma...

We arrived into Rome in the evening, and as we walked through the streets all I could find myself doing was humming Dean Martin's 'On An Evening In Roma'. The weather was again crap, but it was so romantic here. I found myself just wandering - still with the group - but just walking on my own, humming to myself, looking around, soaking it all in.
We had a value-added extra by visiting the Capuchin Monks on our way into Rome. This is a small exhibit - and it's all just bones. Many years ago the Capuchin Monks believed that in death their bones should be used for art - and that's exactly what has happened. Some of the designs are quite cool, but just looking at how they have got spines and skulls and tail bones and hip bones is kinda eery. Weren't allowed to take photos, but I bought a couple of postcards.
That night was lovely actually. We walked around Roma, taking in the sights. We walked down the Spanish Steps, threw coins in the Trevii Fountain, hugged a column at the Pantheon, walked through the Piazza Navona, and had a nice Italian dinner in an Italian ristorante!! Oh, and I ate lots of gelato... My parents had been to Roma about 9/10 years ago, and they have photos of them tossing their coins - I have done the same so am looking forward to putting my photo next to theirs when I get home!! Our day in Rome the following day was lots of fun. The weather was glorious. Only in the shade did it feel a little chilly, but otherwise it was jeans and t-shirt all day! We started with a tour around the Colloseum and Imperial Forum, and after we all caught a bus to the Vatican. From there we could do what we wanted. Pretty much all of us went to the Vatican. Now, you're not spose to take photos in the Sistine Chapel, but we did. The roof is amazing, Michelangelo certainly did an awesome job of that, I hope they paid him well!! After walking through there we heading out into the Piazza San Pietro. There's a dot you can stand on that when you look back at the pillars it looks as though there is only 1 row, as opposed to 4 rows that you can see from any other part of the square - kinda cool, I took a photo of it. Between the chapel and the piazza, we were told the best pizza in the world was at a small shop in the middle. So, yeah we found this pizza shop... AWESOME pizza!! Our tour manager Ali said to try the potato pizza, and yeah, it was soooo good!! I ate a small piece of the margerita pizza while I waited for fresh potato pizza, then I got a big piece of that. You buy your pizza by the weight here, and it's not expensive whish is good. The pizza is so moorish though, I think I could have stuffed a few more big slices in!!
So we left the Vatican, walked around some of the touristy shops, and I managed to call Wifey for her 21st - very happy I was able to get through to her (:-)). We caught the bus back toward the Colloseum, and walked to the 'mouth of truth'. An Audrey Hepburn moment when I stuck my hand in the mouth. After that we just walked back up to the Colloseum to meet the rest of the group. I ran into one fo the girls from our tour and we made a quick dash to a small church which holds Michelangelo's statue of Moses (really good, very well done), and the chains that St Peter wore when he was martyred. We lit a candle and then had to quickly dash back to the group to go back to the hotel.
After a rest we had dinner, then myself, Rach and Emma headed towards town to meet up with the Italian boys we had met in Barcelona. It was so good to see them again, and they were so nice to us. They met us at a metro station and then drove us into Central Roma. We went to a nice little bar for a couple of drinks and some dancing. Then after Marco took us on a small tour of Roma, and we went up to a lookout which had the most amazing view of the city. Even if it was midnight, the view was spectacular - a real wow moment for us girls. We swapped email addresses with the boys and I've kept in touch with Marco since - he's helping me with my Italian!!
Enjoy the photos!! L :-) xo More thumbnails ...
