After a pleasant continental breakfast baseball guy, here-on-in known as BG, and I decided to head down to the Mexican border to do some shopping. As I had the car, and as it was a convertible, I was left to do the driving whilst he was supposed to be navigating. This still didn't stop us nearly ending up in Mexico after he missed the turn-off and I ended up at border control. Fortunately there was a place to turn around so all was not lost. It was nice to be able to drive around with the top down though - it's a real posing car, although this did mean I managed to end up burning my scalp on more than one occasion. There was a huge outlet mall there so the opportunity for spending was endless
One of the things I liked about this mall was that it looked like a little Mexican city all of its own. The buildings were brightly coloured and set out like a small pueblo - it was all outdoors so you could wander round and enjoy the sun at the same time. You could also see the town of Tijuana just across the border, which looked pretty huge and full of little tiny houses. There were some pretty good shops here for clothes and shoes, but I was totally enamoured with the Hello Kitty store. I mean, a whole store full of Hello Kitty stuff!!! How cute!! Needless to say, some money was parted with in there...
We spent a good half day shopping and having to frequently return to the car to load up the trunk with our stuff. The car was parked quite badly. I realised the one thing I cannot do in a left hand drive car, and that is reverse park. I took about 6 attempts to get it in the mess I left it - it made me realise why everyone else was parked front end in first. Still it entertained BG watching me try. Pah.
We left the mall and headed back to San Diego, a short 20 minute drive. BG headed off to practice and I went for a wander around the town and to try and find a light snack. I headed over to Petco Park myself at 4pm as I thought I would join the tour of the stadium. The tour was interesting, not least because the guy doing it was totally mad. I had the pleasure of watching batting practice as there seemed little point me leaving after the tour only to come back again.
The game was good and the guys won, which is always good. The atmosphere at the park was good and all the fans were really friendly. I had a great spot as usual and enjoyed a good game. I even understand it now, pretty much all of it, which is quite an achievement for something that made no sense whatsoever back in June!!
