And so I landed in Los Angeles at 3pm in the afternoon, six and a half hours before I had taken off from Auckland.  God these timezones do my head in!  Fortunately I had managed to sleep for pretty much the entire flight so I was not too morose for my drive.  Once landed I collected my baggage and caught the courtesy bus to the Hertz car hire depot, which was about 10 minutes drive away.  I had reserved a sports convertible and I was not disappointed when I went to collect it - it was gorgeous.  Sadly, as it was drizzling I was not going to try out the convertible roof on this particular journey.
This was the first time I had driven very far in the US, and certainly the first in LA.  I was not looking forward to it, and the omens were not good when I couldn't even work out how to put my auto-manual hybrid in gear to get it to move.  After finding a car park attendant to help me, I finally got going.  I got on the wrong road after just one turn, so ended up doing some sort of U-turn on a main road, and then I was on my way.
The drive down to San Diego was really picturesque.  I took highway 405 followed by Interstate 5 all the way down, occasionally stopping to look out at viewpoints.  I wasn't sure what would be facing me when I pulled off for one stop, as the wrong was low down and I couldn't see anything but road.  I was thus pleasantly surprised when the viewpoint was actually the Pacific Ocean and a nice sunset.
It was dark by the time I made it to San  Diego, but fortunately the directions I had been given to get to the hotel were so good I didn't get lost once.  I rolled into the hotel lobby and got out my luggage, leaving my car to be dealt with by the valets.  I'd normally park my own car, but for some reason that didn't appear to be an option here.  I checked in and was given keys to the suite that had already been booked for me.  The room itself was fantastic - large and spacious with views over both San Diego harbour and Petco Park baseball stadium.  I could see the game underway from the room - I was meant to be there but as it had taken 4 hours to get to San Diego from Los Angeles, I was both tired and a bit too late to make it worthwhile.  I thought instead I would just wait and catch up with baseball guy when the game finished.
And so ends the second 21st September that I have had this year.  Spooky stuff...
