Vegas we luv u & we will be back!!
Las Vegas was definitely a difficult city to leave, literally! We drove on and off motorways with Lou and the trusty google map yelling last minute directions e.g. "get off at the exit that we just went passed" (very helpful).
The drive to Mammoth involved a lot of very very very long straight roads and no towns or gas (thankfully we were maintaining near full tanks after a very close call on running out of petrol in the Grand Canyon earlier in the year), but quite a few brothels and yes that is what the signs advertising them called them: it was eyes front Simon
The land around the road was very barren and, other than the brothels, it looked very unproductive. We then headed up into a pass and dropped into a valley. Very stunning scenery, but miles from anywhere. Headed into another pass and some winding roads. Thank fully Simon was driving very slowly as we came around a corner and encountered a massive truck on the other side of the road. True to personality Simon took considered and effective evasive driving action; Lou swore loudly and hit the horn........
Dropped down into another valley and crossed the final state line: goodbye Nevada hello California, last state before home. This valley was beautiful and lush. It is funny how you change states and the scenery changes dramatically: Nevada, desert; California, green and sunny.
We were heading towards a ski resort and the mountains were starting to appear. Finally reached our destination and discovered that our hotel was literally at the base of the ski lifts (summer though so no snow). Both pretty tired so after over eating at dinner (forgot about American size portions......did not need both soup and salad). Fantastic view of the slopes over dinner (again no snow...).
