Frankfurt does not exactly market itself as tourist central, and in fact seems to be full of tourists who (like us) all thought, well hey, if we have to fly out of the place, we might as well stop there for a day and check it out.

Being Germany even the dodgy red light district, where our hostel happened to be located, did not feel at all dangerous, although there does not seem to be a particularly strong police presence if the guy shooting up in the middle of the footpath outside a strip club in broad daylight was anything to go by.

The 'financial capital', Frankfurt has the modern skyscrapers and the 'big euro' but across the river it also has the gorgeous Sachsenhausen district of beautifully restored wooden-fronted buildings facing on to winding lane ways. Not to mention the compulsory church or three.
The other side of the city is a memorial of sorts. Destroyed between 1938 and 1942, the old Jewish cemetery now looks more like a peaceful garden. The exterior wall is the formal memorial, lined with incomprehensibly long rows of tiny plaques, one for each Frankfurt citizen murdered in the holocaust. The university campus is now housed inside the hideous IG Farben house - built as headquarters of the company that went on to make enormous profits by manufacturing Zyklon B gas pellets.

So this is where our 412 day adventure ends and we head back to reality. But first we have an excruciatingly long flight with 3 tight connections to look forward to.
