Flag of Croatia  , Hvar Island,
Thursday, September 2, 2010

In Hvar town, on Hvar island is another, even smaller, old town consisting mostly of a large square and surrounding buildings (cathedral, church, town hall, theatre). This is going to sound like everywhere else we have been in Croatia, but topping the hill is a Venetian fortress with great views down to the red roofs of the old town.

After Dubrovnik, Hvar apparently gets the most tourists in Croatia - a tourist brochure describes the island as a "tourist heaven" going on to add that "everyone living on the island works in tourism in some way". Hvar seems to be the party island with one club offering what we thought sounded like a logistical nightmare - an 'exclusive beach party' accessible only via taxi ferry at 1am. I don't envy the guy whose job it is to drive that boat.

We went for a hike over the hill behind town to a beach in a secluded bay. From there, we followed a rough path along the coastline for an hour or so. The scrubby bushes tore up our legs, but we were rewarded by views of pretty bays with tiny beaches - a change from the rough rock coastline with choppy water.

The quietest we saw Hvar was as we headed down to the ferry terminal to catch the 6:30am ferry out of town. Some people were just heading home for the night which made us feel very old.
