Varna is a port town turned beach resort town, meaning that the town beach is right next to the crane loading facilities. Not that you can see the cranes for the crowds though. The beach was an array of distractions for the eye - rows of beach umbrellas shading flesh of all colours (mostly tending toward lobster red). The water was just the right temperature for a prolonged dip - a cool respite from the blistering sand. As lovely as it was though, its hard not to feel homesick for Cottesloe while swimming in the browny green opaque water or finding cigarette butts scattered throughout the coarse sand.

The town of Varna is a strange collision of cultures. From ancient ruins of Roman baths to Ottoman influenced architecture and Orthodox churches hidden amongst the concrete lego apartment blocks. Even the holidaying crowds range from Bulgarian families to European backpackers. Overall its a pleasant place. Pleasant but a little forgettable.
