The options for the trains to Romania were a confusing array of possible changes in towns whose names we could not even try to pronounce. Thankfully we only had to sprint twice to make all our connections and the conductor even let us off for not having a compulsory seat reservation.
We discovered that all the hostels in town were closed or didn't exist, eventually we discovered an aging one star hotel in a building dating from the 1700s (and not renovated or kept up since). The corridor had huge distant ceilings, grand double doors  and chandeliers fitted with single electric bulbs, swaying precariously from a single wire. Our cavernous room had faded Turkish carpets and bathroom with that pervading smell of pipes that have been rusting a few centuries.
Oradea as a city is not so different, the peeling grandeur of the city giving way, as in all these former communist countries, to the uniform concrete housing blocks.
From our hotel we could glimpse a beer garden tucked away in a secluded courtyard - it took us half an hour and a close encounter with a feral dog to finally locate the entry. It made a great place to while away a hot afternoon, waiting for our overnight train.
