Where I stayed
Perth could learn a thing or two about riverside development from this town, with lovely walking trails along the banks and a pedestrian (and camel) suspension bridge.
Catching a minibus to the ancient (over 4000 years old) city of Mari, we get nice and close to the Iraqi border (not the good part) and we see some desert at last although the novelty of glaring sun wears off pretty fast. Not much remains of the mud brick city, although the deep foundations of the huge palace are a nice cool refuge
We also stopped at Dura Europos, a city built on cliffs above the Euphrates. Looking at yet more dug - up foundations was not quite as fun as sitting on the citadel wall watching farming life going on below us and listening to the boats sputtering by.
It was not hard to leave Deir Ez Zur - the hostel we stayed at (the only one in town that we could find) being a close contender for the prize of hostel that has gone the longest without ever being cleaned.
