Where I stayed
Goreme was still full of tourists (we are getting more opportunities to practise Japanese in Turkey than in Japan!), the snow had turned to slippery ice and it was cold!
Admittedly, the scenery is stunning. The geological and weather conditions have left strange rock structures which people have been hollowing out and living in for centuries. Detailed painted frescoes on cave-churches are still preserved 900 years on (except for the modern day graffiti).
There are also dozens of underground cities - we spiraled 55m down through the tunnels into a city that had no waste management, but they did have a Christian confessional. Go figure.
We also visited a canyon filled with amazing scenery, a monastery built multi-storeyed into a hill, and a shop trying to sell us bad jewellery (yes, that day was an organised tour).
