Where I stayed

Flag of Turkey  , Turkish Aegean Coast,
Monday, January 25, 2010

The conductor on our bus (who also makes everyone coffee) is thoroughly entertained by us and practices his English by interrogating Bevan about the book he is reading. We finally cross the Dardanelles by vehicle ferry and arrive at our hostel, which shows the movies Gallipoli and Troy on a loop - no prizes for guessing the tourist attractions here.

The Gallipoli peninsula is stark, steep, blanketed in snow and buffeted by wind... so it is no great surprise that the order for the ANZACs to evacuate the peninsular coincided with the start of winter.

Troy is complete with wooden horse (not the original, obviously) - the city itself existed in 10 incarnations from 3000BC... making it by far the oldest city (or crumbling remains of foundations plus some reconstruction) that I have ever seen.
