We were treated to perfect clear skies for sightseeing in Tokyo, although we ventured indoors for such tourist delights as the Sony showroom which suddenly transformed us into greedy materialists until we managed to emerge back into the outdoor daylight of reality.
Our visit coincided with the emperors birthday, a major Japanese holiday. I asked a friendly local, who comes to visit our hostel every morning to practice English, if the shops would be closed for the Emperors birthday. He looked at me quite perplexed and said "no, it is just a holiday."
The evening before the subway was packed and it was the only time we heard people talking on the trains (silence and staring at the floor is the norm). It seems everyone had a few drinks to celebrate.
So all in all we are rather sorry to farewell the country where the Asahi beer headquarters are built like a glass filled with beer, and where the kit kats come in carrot juice flavour...
