The trip by bus from Peru to Bolivia involves a ferry crossing over lake Titicaca (not to mention 3 changes of bus). La Paz itself is a strange sight to behold - it is the highest capital city in the world at 3500m, but it is built in a valley. The poorer people keep building higher up the walls of the bowl shaped valley, so the bus descends through the grimy neighborhoods (with awesome views) into the pleasant city center.

It took us half a day (and quite a few cups of coca leaf tea) to acclimatise to the altitude sufficiently to be able to stand up without a terrible headache... I do not want to know what hangovers are like in La Paz. The center of town has a surprising number of beautiful Cathedrals and Plazas as well as the intriguing witches market where we refrained from buying a dried llama foetus for good luck.
