Where I stayed
Steak N Shake
Word of the day!!! Diversifying your linguistic skill, one word at a time.
IN SPANISH: QUE ESO? Pronounced: "kay- ayso"?
Say it with me. Que eso?
IN ENGLISH: What's this? Que eso? No se.
Make sure you don't get this phrase confused with another Spanish word, "queso" ( cheese in English) like I did while serving a Spanish speaking table at work
I think my new placement at a Steak N Shake has to be part of the plan, and I'm not talking my plan. Not only am I getting plenty of hours with a new staff and a change of scenery (kinda), one out of every four of my tables it seems is full of native Spanish speakers (not to mention a third of our staff speaks Spanish). Oddly, I feel right at home. I'm a bit lost, but I know my speaking skills will improve. Native Spanish speakers are always surprised to see the tall gangly kid with blonde hair (pello oro) speak in Spanish that actually makes sense (kinda).
While I'm awkwardly bumbling my way through sentences in broken Spanish with customers, I'm adjusting to a new set of co-workers and their overall ways of doing things. I want to compare switching a corporate restaurant job location to moving apartments in the same complex. Though the buildings all looks the same, there is a new set of people in every one. It's taken me a week and a half, but I'm diggin' it now. I get to work with a young staff that possesses a positive and hardworking attitude that is left to be desired in some places. We are supported by managers who not only work hard but communicate in a way that doesn't make you want run and polish the chrome in the bathroom when you see them walking through the building. Adaptability. It took me a few days of work, but I got used to doing things a new way.
I like switching things up like this. My mom told me when I was younger that we should always drive a different route to work and school because it stimulates our minds and keeps us creative. Sometimes I just wonder if she was not the best with directions and took the wrong turn sometimes. Other time I agree with her theory. Believing that theory, I'd like to think I'm always ready to roll with the punches. I'm not sure what that phrase is truly in reference to, but I know that I have a big punch to roll with in less than two months.
It seems like I have a lot of on my plate over the next month. I still need to plan a good fundraiser with church to fund my year in Mexico as well as drafting some carefully written letters. The class I am taking this summer is just interesting and useful enough for me to regret not reading the next. When will I learn... I know that I will eventually. Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither is a thirteen page case study response (which I found out the hard way).
Outside of work and school, my participation at Grace Lutheran has been on the upswing since I moved to Tampa. This past week, I was able to put in about fifteen hours working with our middle and high schoolers that led VBS for nearly 70 little 'uns. I gotta say I was very impressed and proud of my youth as well as the staff and volunteers that put on this event. Talk about hard work and dedication. I took notes for sure. I am currently getting ready for a Luther Springs Day camp to come to Grace the week after next. I'll get to play with some old friends, and I get to play counselor for a week. I'll be in my element for sure. The week after that we will be taking a group of 13 of the finest youth I've met to New Orleans for the National Youth Gathering. I'm not usually the type for excitement and glee, but I won't lie to ya, I'm kinda getting stoked. I must be getting old.
For now, I'm trying to learn a little about Tampa. A co-worker told me about a couple Taco Bus locations in our area, so I took a little drive to celebrate a good Friday night at work and tried one of their burritos (and maybe a taco or two). I don't know, but if Taco Bus is anywhere near legit Mexican food, I certainly won't be losing any weight while I'm gone.
Anyways, thanks for the read, and keep the prayers and *cough, the donations coming ;)
Peace and Love.
