Since we are sponsoring a kid at the Ashagram Orphanage in rural Siliguri, we wanted to at least spent 10 days here. We didn't quite know what to expect only that the kids were amazing since my sister had spent 2 months here volunteering. When we arrived, we were greeted by little Rupam - our sponsor-child - and others who handed over tons of flowers and sang the "welcome, welcome song"..a little monotone but sung by 51 beautiful kids a tear-inducing experience. Touched and not quite sure what to do, the kids took over and for the next 3 days we were puppets maneuvered from playground to soccer field trying to satisfy all the kids craving for a little attention. Our new nicknames were "Didi and Dada" which means sister and from morning to evening that's all we heard. We were amazed by their openness, politeness and desire for affection. These are the cutest kids we've ever encountered and we were happy to return as much love as we could by giving endless hugs and kisses back.
When we took a break by visiting Darjeeling for a few days, we found ourselves missing the kids and returning earlier....
We tried to be productive and teach the kids English which turned out to be difficult since keeping 15 kids' attention is very our respect to all the teachers out there!
We also took some of the kids to the local Amusement park on a day excursion which was a highlight and the kids excitement was incredible...getting dressed up in their mix and match style they ran around like headless chicken from ride to ride.
Overall, we fell in love with the kids and are committed to going back regularly and help where we can.
If anyone out there is interested in helping, be it by volunteering as an English teacher or financially..let us know...the goal is to build 4 new houses to sleep 10 kids each - many kids are sadly on a waiting list...
