McLeod Ganj is an isle of peace among the ocean of Indian craziness. You might as well not be in India since this is the home of the Tibetan government in exile and you see very few Indians. The Tibetans are beautiful people which exude such a serenity and calmness making it hard to believe the tribulations they endured in fleeing to India. They don't hassle and just smile....and the Dalai Lama's presence is felt throughout. The cool mountain air makes it a great place to stay for a while and flee the heat of the plains. Really the perfect place to unwind, maybe live the ascetic life, be a little artsy or just enjoy the views of the plains below.
We recommend:
- Chonor Guest House for the flash packer (favorite hotel we stayed at on this trip...so unique and homey)
- Pema Thang Guest House (feeling guilty about splurging we moved to this place next door with great views)
- Lhamo's Croissant - if you wish to eat a real salad
- Visit to Norbulingka Institute for some insight into Tibetan arts
