Where I stayed
Once you splurge it's hard to stop. So once again we find ourselves at a flashpacker establishment in Luang Namtha - The Boat Landing (http://www.theboatlanding.com/). We highly recommend this place for anyone wishing to treat themselves. It's located about 7 kilometers outside of Luang Namtha with a great location on the river.
Luang Namtha is the gateway to the Nam Ha National Forest and many hill tribe villages. We decided that due to the plush environment we've had since visiting Laos, we needed to get back to the basics and what better way to do it than doing a 3-day trek through the forest.
We booked the trek through Green Discovery, an environmentally conscious group located throughout Laos. The trek started about 20 km outside of Luang Namtha at a local village. A little rain accompanied us at the initial ascent into the jungle but quickly ceased
Our first day was only about 5 hours with a lunch break at a bamboo hut. The vegetation was thick and moist due to the recent rainfall, and it wasn't long into the trek that one of the packers noticed the first leech (somehow finding itself right in between her breasts). It was shortly after the first sighting that everyone had contact with the little bloodsuckers (pun intended). Oh well, what a better way to forget about the little woes of the day with "Lao-Lao" the homebrewed rise whiskey of the villagers...and of course sticky rice to smooth the way.
We definitely recommend the hike not only for the beautiful scenery but mostly for the interaction with the locals who are so fun and open.
