Everybody we had met had recommended this place called Semuc Champey...so we took the minibus from Antigua to the "El Retiro lodge" and found ourselves in backpacker heaven. All u-can-eat BBQ buffet, hippies selling their jewelry, tubing on the the river and..of course the eco-friendly toilets. Don't get us wrong, we are all for the environment but you could smells these toilets when taking a shower and brushing your teeth. And since I'm a kacko-phobic it wasn't so relaxing. Anyway, we shared some laughs with fellow backpackers and enjoyed the family-style environment. But the highlight was definitely the limestone bridge of Semuc Champey, on top of which there are several natural pools of different sizes, filled with crystalline mountain spring water. Pretty amazing place. We can only recommend it while we would probably stay at "Las Marias" next time since it's locally owned and right next to the pools.
