Flag of Nicaragua  ,
Tuesday, September 11, 2007

Crossing the Nicaraguan border by boat, we arrived in San Carlos and had a great first impression of Nicaragua. San Carlos is a small fishing village that sits at the headwaters of the Rio San Juan which connects the massive Lake of Nicaragua to the Atlantic Ocean. It is not known to be a tourist destination, but we loved its atmosphere and beautiful sunsets.
Compared to Panama and Costa Rica, Nicaragua has been less affected by the outside world,  retaining its identity and authentic feel. Even though it is the second poorest country in the western hemisphere, the people have been the nicest so far. From the annual tarpon fishing competition, to the town parade...a charming bunch.
