One 3.5 hour flight south and we begin the first leg of our a-t-w journey (surprisingly we´ll spend the next 4 months covering the same distance heading north). As expected, we´ve blown our budget the first day in Panama City...a good start.
Our day was spent on a walking tour strolling through Casco Viejo (the old city), which is full of historic colonial structures and appears to be at the onset of gentrification. We then spent some time walking along Central Avenue in Panama Nuevo (Fulton Street Mall only in Spanish) and finished the day touring the Panama Canal.
We´ve been positively surprised by the dearth of backpackers and westerners in the City, which has made the experience all the more authentic.
Tomorrow we´re heading to Santa Fe, a small village nestled in the middle of the Cordillera Central. The mountain climate should be a nice change.

I need a proofreader
Wow -- apparently, the stress of my move has destroyed my ability to write an error-free sentence. My post should start with, 'Your trip.' This mainly matters since I'm supposed to be some kind of a writer for a living. Punctiliously Yours, Alan

It's amazing how many beautiful, interesting, out-of-the-way places there are in this world. Thanks for showing us a few of them. The pictures are wonderful and the commentary makes it very personal. I think I'll break out the rum and go string up the hammock in the yard. Safe Travels Jack and Pat
