2 more days of riding from Troyes to Montigny (90 miles), and from Montigny to Le Plombieres (60 miles). I rode both days w/ Brian and Steve b/c we ride at about the same level and ride similar bikes (Brian rides a Sampson and Steve rides a Trek OCLV like mine). So far we're all really glad we brought our lightweight carbon bikes unlike most of the 25 riders who are generally on cyclocross or hybrid bikes w/ much wider tires and more weight to carry - but we'll see how our bikes hold up on rougher roads. The rides have been difficult w/ headwinds and hills. We've spent the last 2 nights in a couple of very nice campsites which I really like. I find a quiet night spent under the stars to be tranquil and restorative.
I also much prefer the small French villages to the bustle and stench of Paris. The villages are filled w/ the aroma of baking pastries and bread; it appears the first order of the day for any local is to acquire his/her daily bread as evidenced by the ubiquitous baguette-toting pedestrian. Flowers hang from every window and fill the town squares. The people have been very friendly and seem to understand our limited mix of English, French and gestures.

The Kids from California

Aside from Brian, who's from LA, there's Steve from Burlingame in the Bay Area and Helmut and Pat from San Diego. Steve just recently retired as an IS manager for a pediatric hospital. He's very good about taking my sarcasm especially if we stop for pastries frequently. The guy loves a French tart.
Helmut and Pat travel like no tomorrow. He rides all kind of rides all over the world when he's not looking after his commercial properties in SD. They know Vienna well and promise to turn us onto the best strudel to be had there.

Well, the wi-fi's limited and dinner's calling, so until next time - au revoir
