On Saturday we visited Stowe Gardens near Buckingham with our friends Christine and Keith. The house here is impressive at about 900 feet frontage, but we only saw it from a distance as it was not open to the public. (An old guide we were given shows magnificent interior views, but they were not for us).
Stowe is unique in the quantity of beautiful and unusual Temples, Bridges, Monuments and Follies that are placed at key intersections of the gardens. Lancelot "Capability" Brown, the designer of many great British gardens, started his career at Stowe. On Sunday the 25th. Peter's brother John took us to see the Crofton Beam Engines near Marlborough. The oldest of the two beam engines was built in 1812 by Bolton and Watt. On many weekends a group of enthusiasts run the restored engines so that they pump water to feed the canal, just as when they were originally installed. We saw the 1812 engine running, but unfortunately did not take any photographs.
