The amazing pagan fire festival that has been celebrated for hundreds of years.  One the books I read about it referenced 1000 BC.  Tribute to fire, what makes the glory of the sun so fierce.
Traditionally, all the fires which had been burning day and night all year on the home hearths would be extinguished.  Then by rubbing two sticks toghether, a bonfire would be lit on Calton hill and torches would be set ablaze to eventaully be carried back home to light the household fires anew.
The Beltane is also a ceremony of spring time, and the first of May.  Celebrating prosperity and a good harvest from the newly planted seeds.
It was an amazing time. Painted people and fire and drum performances all over the hill.  At dawn we climbed Arthur's Seat mountain and 'washed' our faces in the dew which is suposed to make us beautiful.
