Erica, Laura, and Kindra (ELK) decided to ride their bikes from Kingston to Ottawa - and back - in seven days!
1. On the first day we began along the Cataraqui Trail. I know that Cataraqui used to be the name for Kingston, and it also means 'murky water' and 'place of retreat'. Along the way Kindra spotted a huge limestone cave and we explored! There were hundreds of dragon flies along the trail, different colours and sizes. Bullfrogs too. Lunch was a picnic on a lakeshore, beside an abandoned boat. We met a remarkable birdwatcher, Graham, and his wife, Pat, just before we got onto Highway 15.
In the middle of the day, after being on the road for about six or eight hours, all three of us suddenly felt wicked cramping pain in our legs. None of us are experienced bikers so we didn't quite know how to deal with the crippling agony! This was the worst pain of the trip. That night we camped at Poonamalie Locks at Smith Falls. We were the only ones at the Lock station besides on canoer who we later named Rico Century. There was a wild storm that night, we now refer to it as 'the flood'. I didn't really know what to expect for wild animals in that area so when a frog got into our dark tent I was scared half to death. The tent collapsed on us in the middle of the night. Needless to say, our gear and spirits were quite dampened for day two...
