Quebec is such an enchanted city. There are so many beautiful and historic buildings that lie at the top of a cliff, St. Lawrence River floating below. Our journey's aim was to celebrate the winter Carnaval. There is much to learn about this festival at:
The city is about a six hours drive north east so it is much colder there!! We were freezing just walking around to look at the ice and snow sculptures despite having bundled up warmly. Gradually our exploration led us down the hill, along the old city wall, to the Place Hydro-Quebec. There we found a crowd of people, all ages, stomping their feet and dancing hand in hand to traditional french folk music. The fiddle and song were enough to get us moving and warmed in no time! There was great spirit here in the plaza, a connection even between strangers.
After we ate dinner, we returned to the Place Hydro-Quebec and this time found it full of young people dancing to techno music that filled the air. The lights had changed to cool blues and greens and everyone was partying in their toques and scarves! I wish I could have captured such a sight on film but it was the feeling which made such an impression.
One of the most memorable activites was to walk the long trail up the side of the hill to what is called the Citadrelle. The rock side of the hill looked as if it had been combed. I think the St. Lawrence River used to run fast enough over the rock that it wore down the sides and created the shape it is now. The water still had current but would best be described as gently moving iceburgs.
I liked it so much I considered moving there and still haven't ruled it out!
