I have always been a big fan of the solstice and have been very much looking forward to celebrating the longest day of the year in the 'land of the midnight sun'.  Events and celebrations began early on the twentieth of June. The city hall park was set up with marquis, a giant teepee, and live music on the water.  We really enjoyed our daylit night there.
On the actual summer solstice, June 21st, we went back to the city hall park just around lunch, after the parade of brightly decorated trucks and floats had passed!  We stood in a looooong line up for some fish, we'd heard so much about the famous fish fry. Sadly, just as we got to the end, they ran out of fish - the only thing worse than standing in line is standing in line for nothing!!! But we found a vendor and bought some caribou stew and bannock.  The sun was so hot that we broke a record for all time high on this day in Yellowknife.

That evening we sat on our balcony, enjoying the cooling breeze and a dram of Blue Label. We sat reading until well after midnight.  (Reccomended read:  "Late Nights on Air" by Elizabeth Hay).  It was a very relaxing way to appreciate the longest day of sun.

Walking in a Summer Wonderland:

It's been amazing to see the subarctic tundra come alive! This spring and summer has been long awaited.

With the sun up nearly all hours now, we treat ourselves to late night hikes and beautiful sunsets around midnight.

The landscape still seems quite stark in comparison to the south but looking closely, you can find there are many beautiful colours of nature in macro-vision...
