We drove along the NO 1 until Akureyri. It was a pretty little town with brightly coloured houses. Second largest after Reykjavik. We ate delicious Thai lunch - a fusion of Icelandic fish and Thai curry. I had Stir fish (never heard of that one before) in a 'karry' (Icelandic for curry). Senica had the buffet - 'smorgasbord', if you will. The guy there asked me why we had chosen Iceland for a honeymoon - I stumbled with an answer, something about hot tubs and romantic scenery. Although Senica and I are completely sure that this paradise is ideal for a honeymoon, I can't really describe the narrative that contributed to alluring us there.
In pursuit of that romantic landscape, we drove north up Hwy 82 into Eyafjord. The road was nicely paved. We stopped in Dalvik. We got a room at Foss Hotel (normally 22000 ISK per night!!) but the hotel was technically still 'closed' on winter hours (mid May) so we got a rate of 149000 (which is still pretty expensive for a hotel that isn't even open, but we were tired and ready for a rest). We have a suspicion that hotel prices may depend on nationality of the guest, I'm not saying they dislike the Danes. Our hotel is nestled by the Norwegian sea with a view of the mountains in all directions. This is a huge fishing village, biggest freezing factory in Iceland, but we cannot get a fish dinner anywhere. It has been a challenge all through Iceland actually to find fresh fish. We figure they must eat so much fish at home no one wants to go out to a restaurant for more fish. So we got a pizza - pineapple, onions, tomatoes, and black olives. Senica is going to offer this at his store back home and call it The Dalvik. We are tired today. We need to slow our speed and so we slept.
