Seven Wonders of Canada

The CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation)and The National are presently conducting a contest to find Canada's Seven Wonders.

Do you have a favourite place in Canada? Do you have a treasured spot our viewers should see?
The National and
Sounds Like Canada are searching for the Seven Wonders of Canada and we need your help.
We want you to nominate what you consider to be the most wonderful place and tell us why it's so special.

Here is my edited submission:

We recently changed the license plate on our automobile from "Yours to Discover" to "Beautiful British Columbia". This was as a result of a move from Ottawa to Prince George, BC.

Prince George lies in Northern British Columbia in a relatively flat part of the province between the Coast Mountains and the Rocky Mountains.

It is surrounded by a vast rolling sea of beautiful forests which unfortunately are being swept by a "red tide" - an aftermath of the mountain pine beetle. The city is also located at the confluence of the Fraser and Nechako Rivers. This has also resulted in a joining of distinctive, spectacular river scenery, unique to this part of Canada.

With this in mind, I would like to propose the:

"Steeply Cut Banks" of the Nechako and Fraser Rivers"

as one of the Seven Wonders of Canada

Their stunningly steep pitch, great heights and smooth surfaces never cease to amaze us. During our many Nordic walks along these banks, we  gaze upon their beauty with astonishment, rapture and unequivocal admiration at every opportunity, no matter what the season. It is fair to say that a certain bonding or imprinting has taken place which has left an indelible mark on us.

Steeped in history, thanks to the Lheidli T'enneh First Nation, Sir Alexander Mackenzie (1793) and Simon Fraser (1807), the Fraser River is one of Canada's great western rivers. It is near the confluence of the Fraser and the Nechako Rivers, not far from downtown Prince George, that these two rivers show off their "grand banks" which plunge spectacularly from great heights into the fast flowing waters.

Whether one approaches Prince George by air, road or rail, the "steeply cut banks" are the landmarks which define this area and make it unique.

Their majestic banks are best appreciated while walking the Heritage River Trails which link the two rivers. Starting from the rustic Cameron Street Bridge, the trail leads along the Nechako River, through Cottonwood Island Park, past the confluence and then along the Fraser River to historic Fort George Park. Another trail in J.C. Gunn Park which runs along the scenic eastern top edge of the Fraser banks, affords a bird's eye view of Prince George and surroundings.

It is precisely the physical beauty of these river banks, along with their historical context, which evokes in us a sense of being in a very special place - an inspirational place - worthy of inclusion in the SEVEN WONDERS OF CANADA.

Since a picture is worth a thousand words, I have posted some photos as well as a slide show.
