" I would never have thought to see this in my lifetime"

This of course is the phrase many of us of a certain age are left with to describe the events of yesterday -- the election of Barack Obama as the 44th president of the United States.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kee Beach - A Last Chance to Snorkel

Kee Beach is located in Haena State Park at the end of Highway 560 which runs along the north coast of Kauai.

It is also noteworthy for being at the start of the famous Napali Coast which can accessed by walking the Kalalau Trail just across the parking lot from Kee Beach.

The beach is on a beautiful lagoon which is ideal for snorkeling, swimming, scuba diving and fishing.

It was also our last chance to go snorkeling and we did not pass it  up. After our beautiful snorkeling experience at Hanauma Bay near Honolulu, who could blame us for wanting another look under the waters of the Pacific Ocean.  This time we came prepared with an underwater camera.

It was exciting taking the underwater photos but it quickly became apparent that the underwater scenery at Kee Beach - Kauaui's best snorkeling spot - was only a shadow of that which we found underneath the waters of Hanauma Bay.

To qualify that statement, it needs to be said that the waters were deeper at Kee Beach and the coral reefs further away. This led to more open water and a less intimate look at the coral reefs.  At Hanauma Bay the coral was often so close to the surface that there was barely enough depth to swim over it. Frankly, I found that too claustrophobic. At Kee Beach there were huge underwater vistas especially at the end of the reef where that Pacific Ocean dropped off into a blue nothing.

Because of the closeness of the coral at Hanauma Bay there was also a variety of colorful fish that flitted about at close range. It was frankly awesome. It made me regret not having an underwater camera. At Kee Beach there seemed  to be one variety of fish which moved about in large schools. It was beautiful but not awe inspiring.

Lastly, I have to make a confession. The photos were taken with an underwater "throw-away" camera and the quality was not that great. Nevertheless as I look at the quality of these same photos after they have been uploaded to Travelpod something else seems to have happened and the quality now is so marginal that they are almost not worth uploading.
