Trail of the Whispering Giants: Peter Wolf Toth
Valdez
As I was exploring the small hamlet of Valdez, my attention was drawn to a huge wooden statute of a Native American head standing beside the residence of Prince William Sound College.
Images of Mt. Rushmore came to mind.
It is not often that I have seen a wooden statute of this size therefore my curiosity was certainly piqued.
Even more unusual was to see the process of restoration by a person working with a tall ladder to get access to the face of the giant.
I couldn't by-pass this scene without getting to the bottom of the story.
To my surprise, the person doing the restoring turned out to be the wood sculptor himself - Peter Wolf Toth.
I was surprised by his down-to-earth, friendly demeanor and willingness to talk about his works and art.
It turns out that the wooden giant here in Valdez is not the only one. There are many, many more. In fact there is one in every state of the U.S.A. and several provinces of Canada.
The ensemble of this work is called the "Trail of the Whispering Giants" to honour Native Americans.
Mr. Wolf Toth seems to be far from finished with his humanitarian works, as he expressed an interest in continuing his "Trail of Whispering Giants" to more places in Canada.
One of these beautiful works of art would look terrific in Stanley Park in Vancouver. I will have to look into the possibilities.
