We biked the 5km out to Moon Hill although we passed the entrance a few times we eventually found the ticket man, locked our bikes up and passed the 60y old woman trying sell us cold coke we had made it!!!! The trek of 1300 stairs took us to an amazing lookout of the surrounded towns. As we reached the top there standing to greet us are these old ladies trying to sell/begging us to buy their stuff. One even had a sheet in english stating that she liked collecting other countries currencies…this is a common tactic to get cash off tourists…pretty smart, although they're a bit cheeky and will only take $1 or $2 coins and higher, as those are the only ones they don’t have yet…sure :)
After Moon Hill we biked down some dirt backroads, which were by far the most rewarding
After a couple of swings of his stick his grandmother came up, and apologized, talked to the little boy and than turned around and demanded payment for the photos we took. We were obviously disappointed by this request, and all I had in my pocket was 3 or 4 RMB, so I gave it to the little boy. The grandmother berated us and demanded more, we refused and than got on our bikes and got out of there.
One thing that struck me as odd was that many of the newer homes in the countryside are skinny 3-4 story, apartment building looking homes…. I imagine it has something to do with taxes. Anyway, its just strange to see the tall buildings surrounded by fields.
We dropped off our bikes at Giggling tree, grabbed some beers and than walked the 5kms into town watching the sunset and gearing up for a night on the town, as we waited for Santa to visit :)
