It's Thursday, March 6th, or my day 7. I did a fairly easy 11 in to Dick's Creek Gap at mile 67.5, and came on in to Cloud9 Hostel, which is an awesome place with a Jacuzzi!
There's a nasty front coming in tonight. It's supposed to rain all day tomorrow, then get ass cold. This combination is not good. On Tuesday, I came out of Neel's Gap in the pouring rain, and actually enjoyed my day on the trail. With the possible exception of getting on top of some mountain and missing the next white blaze and going a half mile down the wrong trail. But yeah, Tuesday was fun. Once you're wet, you don't care anymore. It's very boolean. You can't get any wetter. It's a 1 or a 0. Anyway, it stopped raining around 3 PM; I was in Low Gap shelter that night, and it was all good. But thagt night it dropped below freezing. My socks froze, my gloves froze, and worst of all my boots froze. In the morning, I had to hike for a mile in them before I could finish lacing them up, and it was past noon when they were totally thawed. The hike that day was not bad, though, my first 15 mile day. In the morning, there was some snowy frost on the trees, which made this really cool halo effect, and as it thawed, it would kinda snow on you as you walked.
But this is what I'm thinking about right now. It's supposed to rain all day tomorrow, and then drop down way below freezing for two days. I know I will be wet, which I can deal with, and I'm also prepared for the cold. But I don't want to have frozen boots again. So it seems like I have an opportunity here. If I zero here for another day, I can stay dry, and only have to deal with the cold. I'm about 90% decided that I will zero. I'm still 2 days ahead of where I thought I would be, so I feel OK about it. I've already got my provisions, and decided to go straight to the NOC rather than stop in Franklin. That's probably 5 nights 6 days, but I've got 7 days worth of food.
If I do zero here tomorrow, I'll have another opportunity to update this blog. Give some more juicy details.
