Where I stayed
One of the things we talked about -wrt wide open spaces - was that we were in a car and therefore protected from the lifeforcesucking winds. If we would have been standing out there, we would have been bowed to the wind and deafened and exhausted. But from a car, it's absolutely gorgeous.
About a half hour into the drive, there was a La Migra inspection point - basically they route all the traffic off of I-10, and just stare at you as you go by. I guess we didn't flinch, because they didn't stop us. Jill had decided to put on a baseball cap "because it looks more American." Anyway...
Walked around 6th St. which was cool, if a little dead on a Sunday night. It really strikes you, though, that it's a scene, that it's about bar-hopping and drinking, so ultimately, not so much my scene. Heck, even when I was in college, I was not attracted to the bar scene. I know over the last 5 years or so I've spent a lot of time in Ben & Nick's on College, but it's not the same as this 6 blocks of worship to the alcohol gods. Oh well. Maybe tonight we'll find some live music and remind ourselves why we came to Austin.
But we did find an awesome restaurant - right around the corner from the hotel - that served very tasty Cuban food and had a good vegetarian selection. with Cuban food, you can always get black beans and rice, yucca, and tostones, but they also had two tofu dishes that were yummy and didn't seem out of place. Jill had a mojito.
Today, we're going to drive around and explore - probably hit both the University and the SoCo district. Our only goal is to find a good and interesting lunch.
Oh, before I forget to mention it, we saw RollerGirls. Perhaps you saw the reality series on A&E about Austin's women's roller derby league? Very punk rock. Works for me... Well, I guess they had a match, or a bout, or a race, or whatever they call it, yesterday, and we saw a few of them hanging out - on skates and in full DIY regalia.
