Munich- The Homeland Part II
Entry 15 of 17 | show all | print this entry |
We did not leave the heat and humidity in Austria. Munich is just as hot, and just as sticky.
We arrived last night at about 8:30, it was nice at that point. Walking nearly a mile with The Backpack was not so nice. We found the hostel no problem, checked in, and went to the Italian place next door out of convenience. The prices were a tad bit higher than what we normally look for in a place to eat. The food (at least mine) was not worth the price. I still can't get over paying 2.90 for a tiny bottle of carbonated water. I just wanted tap water, but as usual, the restaurant doesn't offer free water. We sat around the bar, I didn't get anything because I was still sulking about my dinner. When we got back to the hostel, the 4 girls we share the room with were all sleeping already. I figured Munich would be the party city for most people our age, but evidentely not for our roommates. I heard a lot of exaggerated sighs and tossing and turning while I riffled through my backpack in the dark.
I came up with an itinerary for this city, because now, with a week left, I've decided that I need to get more out of the cities I visit. Today we went on a Munich highlights walking tour. It was 2.5 hours and very interesting. Pretty much everything in Munich is rebuilt after 88% was flattened in WWII. We saw the art museum Hitler had built for classical art. The tour guide said that Hitler hated any 'isms' (realism, cubism, impressionism, etc.) and modern art, so made the House of Art that was exclusively for very classical works and showcased Aryan ideals. He made a building nearby the exhibit for 'crappy art' and it was called something like 'Degenerate Art Exhibition.' Everyone was supposed to go to the real art museum and then maybe to the degenerate one to see how bad it was compared to the first. 400,000 people visited the House of Art, and 4 million people visited the degenerate art exhibit. After the war, when deciding whether to destroy the place or not, they ultimately decided to make Hitler's building a modern art museum!
After the tour, we went to a beer garden (not THE beer garden) and got half liters of beer, wurst, and kraut. It was actually very good! After feasting, Andrea and I parted ways and I was to go on the 'Third Reich Tour' at 3, and she was going back to the hostel. Along the way to the meeting place I found a European equivalent to Bath and Body Works and stopped in. They were having a huge sale! So, after looking at the time when I left the store, I speed-walked to the meeting point and wondered if maybe just for today they'd start the tour 15 minutes late. Well, they didn't. I guess I'll save the Hitler tour for tomorrow. All we have planned is to visit the sites we didn't see today and have a picnic in the English Gardens.
Less than a week til home :( :)

'more copy' meaning that you didn't write more about it (as in the newspaper: copy (as a noun) refers to written or typewritten text for typesetting, printing, or publication.)

Hi Lisa,
Nice to talk to you today. I'm surprised that the Austrian stay didn't get more copy -- I didn't know it was hot there until your call. you didn't mention the Belvedere or the castles. I'll have to wait until you are home.
Speaking of castles, are you going to Neuschwanstein Castle? That has got to be on your list! Let me know about that please.
See you soon, less... show all
