On our way out of the Badlands, Lew saw big horn sheep! They were below us in the steep rock formations.  We pulled over on the side of the road and ran through stinging grass and nettle to get a better view.  This marked the end of the "wild" part of our cross country travel. From here, we had 3 days to drive from South Dakota to Tionesta, PA to spend the 4th of July weekend with my family at my parent's camp.

We drove 10 hours through South Dakota and Minnesota to Tomah, Wisconsin, where we met Lew’s parent’s friend Carol, her son Brian, his wife Shannon, and their two girls.  Lew’s parent’s were very good friends with Carol and her husband when they lived in Alaska.  We went with the whole family plus some friends to Culver’s, which is a mid-west restaurant famous for butterburgers and frozen custard.  Let’s just say that it was a nice welcome back into civilization after almost two weeks of camp food in the great outdoors.

Kelly on

L & L,
You guys have an awesome blog! I know it's a lot of work to keep it up while you're on the trail, but know that it's really well done and wonderful reading for those of us who are still at our desks, wishing we were with you guys ;)
I hope it's not too cheesy to say that you & your trip are an inspiration to pursue hopes & dreams, however wild.
Safe travels & keep writing! Love,
Kelly & Chris
